Roman Romanov
Noôdome community member and Director of the Gulag History Museum
The museum was founded in 2001 by Anton Antonov-Ovseyenko, a celebrated historian, publicist, and social activist who as the son of an “enemy of the people” spent time in Stalin’s gulags himself.

The Gulag History Museum is a centre for studying, understanding, and openly discussing the history of mass repression in the USSR. The museum collects and studies materials from state and family archives, recollections of those involved in the events and their personal belongings, and objects found in locations where the camps were situated.

As well as giving a profound general knowledge of the political repression in Russia, visiting the museum also allows those who come to look into their own family histories, since most families had relatives who were victims of the repression.
